چکیده

Multi-radio mobile communication devices are increasingly gaining market share due to the diversity of currently deployed and continuously emerging radio access technologies. Multi-homing support in multi-radio terminals, i.e., simultaneous use of two or more radio interfaces, provides improved user experience through increase in available bandwidth capacity and reliability of wireless access. Furthermore, optimized assignment of application traffic flows to available interfaces and radio access bearer services contributes to economic and power consumption efficiency. We study the problem of traffic flow assignment in a mobile node, multi-homed through a set of different technology radio interfaces. We provide an analytical formulation for the problem and prove its hardness through transformation from the Multiple Knapsack Problem with Assignment Restrictions. Problem solutions are approximated with a heuristic algorithm that is based on local search and is characterized by efficient execution times for a wide set of realistic problem sizes. The quality of approximation is rather satisfactory and is evaluated through comparison of heuristic and exact solutions for a large set of randomly generated problem instances. Moreover, an evaluation of the approach through simulation supports these findings and provides an estimation of the associated mobility management overhead that is limited and allows real deployment of the decision mechanism. 2010 Elsevier B.V. Handover Cost Optimization in Traffic Management for Multi-homed Mobile Networks

In this paper, we study the traffic management problem for multi-homed mobile networks with the objective of minimizing the overall handover cost. Two different traffic distribution modes are considered in our study: the Fractional Flow Assignment (FFA) mode which assumes the bandwidth demand from one connection is infinitely splittable and can be assigned to different wireless access networks,...

Different Network Performance Measures in a Multi-Objective Traffic Assignment Problem

Traffic assignment algorithms are used to determine possible use of paths between origin-destination pairs and predict traffic flow in network links. One of the main deficiencies of ordinary traffic assignment methods is that in most of them one measure (mostly travel time) is usually included in objective function and other effective performance measures in traffic assignment are not considere...

Congestion Control and Channel Assignment in Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Wireless Mesh Networks

We address the problem of congestion control in multi-radio, multi-channel, wireless mesh networks. Compared to its single radio counterpart for which solutions exist, this problem is significantly more complex because it requires the radio channel assignments and the traffic allocations per channel be jointly optimized. We address the problem by introducing a formulation that allows its decomp...

A Provably-Correct Protocol for Seamless Communication with Mobile, Multi-Homed Hosts

Modern consumer devices, like smartphones and tablets, have multiple interfaces (e.g., WiFi and 3G) that attach to new access points as users move. These mobile, multi-homed computers are a poor match with an Internet architecture that binds connections to fixed end-points with topology-dependent addresses. As a result, hosts typically cannot spread a connection over multiple interfaces or path...

A Novel Multicast Tree Construction Algorithm for Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Wireless Mesh Networks

Many appealing multicast services such as on-demand TV, teleconference, online games and etc. can benefit from high available bandwidth in multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks. When multiple simultaneous transmissions use a similar channel to transmit data packets, network performance degrades to a large extant. Designing a good multicast tree to route data packets could enhance the...
